Steel Production, Consumption, Import and Export in India
According to World Steel Association (WSA) estimates, global steel production showed mixed trends across major producing countries in August 2025, with India standing out for its strong performance.
India’s crude steel production rose sharply by 13.2% year-on-year in August 2025 and by 0.8% over July 2025, while total production for calendar year 2024 reached 149.4 million tonnes, reflecting a 6.2% increase over 2023 and underscoring the country’s resilience amid global volatility.
During April to September 2025, crude steel production increased to 82.31 million tonnes (up 12.4% year-on-year), finished steel production rose to 78.56 million tonnes (up 11.1%), and finished steel consumption reached 78.88 million tonnes (up 8.4%).
On the trade front, steel exports improved to 0.58 million tonnes in September 2025 from 0.53 million tonnes in August, while finished steel imports declined marginally to 0.65 million tonnes from 0.67 million tonnes, as per provisional JPC data.
Despite this monthly improvement, India has largely remained a net steel importer since April 2024, excluding June 2025, with net imports of 0.62 million tonnes in September 2024 being the highest since April 2024.
